Hailsham Bowling Club

President's Day 21/09/2024

As is tradition, every year we hold a President's Day whereby the current President choses a charity that the club raises funds for.  This year’s chosen charity was:-

Alzheimer’s Society UK

Unlike any other President’s Day, this year it fell on our President’s 90th birthday, so double celebrations were in order.

Thankfully the rain stayed away and we started the afternoon with a spider, where the 40 members present, many resplendent in their charity t-shirts, arranged themselves around the edges of the green and all bowled together on the count of 3 towards the jack placed in the centre.  It was carnage as bowls were knocked in every direction before the winning shot settled on the jack, winning themselves a bottle of whisky, donated to the club.

After a friendly game of 15 ends, where our birthday girl showed us all just how good she can bowl at the magnificent age of 90, we retired for high tea of sandwiches and delicious cakes, served by our hard-working social team, followed by speeches, presentations and the raffle (where all prizes has been donated by the members).

To end a wonderful afternoon Dorothy thanked everyone for their kindness and generosity over the past 3 years of her Presidency, which is sadly coming to an end in November.  She was then delighted to inform us that with just a few more donations to collect, so far we have raised more than £1,800.00 for this year’s good cause.

3 weeks later after all funds had been collected the total had reached £2,000.00. David Cohen, the Regional Fundraiser for the Kent and East Sussex areas of the Alzheimer’s Society UK was invited to the club to be presented with a cheque for the funds raised. David thanked Dorothy for choosing his charity and to everyone for the warm and friendly welcome he was given. He was delighted at the sum of £2,000 which he enlightened everyone as to how the money would be used and the difference it will make.

This year has been the largest amount of money ever collected in the 101-year history of the club. Well done to all who contributed both their time & money to this worthy cause.
